His mom had seen him go off to war,
and today he came back home.
She sat quietly across from him now,
as the honor guard stood proud and strong.
No more letters or cards would come.
All of that had come to pass.
All she would have to hold on to now
was a flag and three pieces of brass.
Over the grassy knoll she heard
"Taps" sounding it's mournful cry.
And a tear rolled down her aging face,
as a rifle pointed up to the sky.
Piercing the silence came shot one,
then two, then the last of three.
Then silence came over this sacred ground,
while the flag was folded tenderly.
The three spent shells of shiny brass
were buried inside the fold,
and presented slowly to this mom,
forever to have and to hold.
Receiving and holding it to her heart,
she stood and walked across the grass.
And while touching his coffin softly,
she kissed the flag with three pieces of brass.

Please pay a visit to the following site! It is a wonderful tribute to members of various armed forces units, with special page contributions for many of those veterans listed on The Wall. It is still in process, and needs information from veterans and their families. Take a look and see if you can participate.
